Opening paragraph of forthcoming article on Crime Analysis:
With no better evidence than the pocket-sized computer most of have nearby all the time, we know that technology has evolved rapidly over the last few years. The advancements that made the smartphone possible have also enabled us to analyze crime in ways never before possible. In A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes proclaimed that “There is a strong family resemblance about misdeeds, and if you have all the details of a thousand at your finger ends, it is odd if you can’t unravel the thousand and first.” Holmes was right, but what he did not envision was the ability to have all the details of a million misdeeds, the computing power to analyze them, and the algorithms to unravel not only the thousand and first but many, many more.
